Do you know a child who would like to play violin, viola, cello or bass?

The Huntsville Youth Orchestra provides that opportunity along with private lessons at an affordable price.

A Sound Investment in Youth

Who Are We?
The Huntsville Youth Orchestra is a community and area wide children's orchestra, which was organized to provide children who want to play string instruments a place to perform. This is a unique opportunity for children to perform string instruments violin, viola, cello, or bass in a group setting. There are twelve rehearsals and at least one performance per semester. HYO contracts with Sam Houston State University students and faculty for conductor, instructors, and facilities.

For those students who have never played a string instrument, HYO offers a beginning strings class. This class, known as Huntsville Strings Unlimited, has twelve rehearsals and one recital per semester. It is geared towards the beginning student with the intent that they should eventually perform with HYO.

Beginning Students

Students will need to provide their own instruments, which may be purchased or rented from several vendors in the area. Private lessons are also provided by SHSU students at half price, ($10 per week). All students must enroll in private lessons. HYO is for children 7 to 18. Registration is $60 per semester.  Second players from the same family are discounted to $40 and any students beyond that are free.  First time students in the fall of 2012 are only charged $30 for the first semester.

Rehearsals take place in the Music Building on the north part of Sam Houston State University. Click here to for a map.

Huntsville Youth Orchestra is sponsored in part by the Huntsville Arts Commission.
